The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed reports suggesting that a journalist was detained within the premises of the Anambra State House of Assembly, stating that no such incident occurred.
In a statement on Thursday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the officers on duty only carried out standard security procedures by verifying the journalist’s identity and confirming the authenticity of his invitation before granting access to the Assembly facility.
According to Ikenga, the process was routine, non-punitive, and focused solely on ensuring the safety of the facility, lawmakers, staff, and visitors.
He further clarified that the remark about an “enemy” made by one of the officers during the incident was a situational statement that came after the journalist’s explanation appeared unsatisfactory, which briefly caused a misunderstanding but was later amicably resolved.
Ikenga also revealed that investigations showed that the individual who invited the journalist was neither a member nor staff of the Anambra State House of Assembly but was himself visiting the complex on the Assembly’s invitation.
Reaffirming the Command’s respect for the media, the Police spokesman stated that the Anambra State Police Command “remains committed to maintaining a cordial and professional relationship with members of the press and continues to value their role as critical partners in promoting public safety and accountability.”
The Command urged members of the public, especially media practitioners, to disregard any misleading narratives suggesting harassment or detention, emphasizing that officers acted strictly within the bounds of established security procedures.
