The Executive Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has commended the Nigerian Navy for its vital role in ensuring peace and security within the state’s maritime domain, noting that security remains a key driver of sustainable economic growth.
Governor Otu made the commendation on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, when the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Chidozie Donald Okehie, paid him a courtesy visit at the Governor’s Office, Calabar.
In his remarks, the Governor lauded the Navy’s efforts in combating criminal activities along the waterways and coastal communities, describing the service as a dependable partner in maintaining law and order.
He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the state government and the Navy to tackle emerging security challenges, including the activities of non-state actors and the rising issue of youth unemployment.
“Peace and security are essential foundations for development. The contributions of the Nigerian Navy in safeguarding our maritime environment have greatly enhanced the security architecture of Cross River State and boosted confidence among investors,” Governor Otu stated.
Rear Admiral Okehie, in his response, appreciated Governor Otu for his administration’s unwavering support to the Nigerian Navy, especially towards the operations of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory and the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command.
He assured that the Command, under his leadership, remains committed to the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, in maintaining maritime safety, securing waterways, and strengthening civil-military cooperation.
The FOC was accompanied by senior naval officers, including the Command Operations Officer, Commodore C. E. Oji; the Commander, NNS Victory, Commodore A. Oride; and other principal staff officers of the Command.
The visit, according to Rear Admiral Okehie, was part of ongoing efforts to reinforce the longstanding partnership between the Nigerian Navy and the Cross River State Government in promoting maritime security and socio-economic development.
