Actor Baba Ijesha Freed After Appeal Court Clears Him of Sexual Assault Conviction

Nigerian actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has regained his freedom after spending more than three years in prison. He was released on Friday, November 14, 2025, following a decision by the Court of Appeal which cleared him of the sexual assault charges for which he was convicted in 2022.

The development was made public by fellow actor Yomi Fabiyi, who announced the release in a Facebook post. Fabiyi expressed relief over the court’s decision, stating, “You are now officially free and out. Baba Ijesha is not just back but better.”

In his post, Fabiyi reflected on the legal journey, stressing the importance of due process and cautioning against situations where “sentiments can sometimes overshadow the rule of law.” He also highlighted concerns over aspects of the investigation and evidence presented during the initial trial, urging for more responsible public engagement on sensitive matters, especially those relating to child protection.

Baba Ijesha had been sentenced to 16 years imprisonment by the Lagos State High Court on July 14, 2022, after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor. His case generated nationwide debate and widespread public interest, drawing strong reactions from both supporters and critics.

A Human Rights Organization has also issued a statement in response to the development, reiterating its firm stance against all forms of sexual abuse, particularly involving minors. The organisation stressed its continued commitment to advocating justice, transparency, and the protection of fundamental human rights, regardless of the circumstances.

With the Appeal Court’s judgment now in effect, Baba Ijesha’s release marks a significant turn in a case that has been closely monitored for years.
