A tense confrontation between a soldier and a suspected criminal at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate, Warri, Delta State, turned fatal on Monday, October 13, 2025.

According to a statement from the Headquarters of 63 Brigade, the incident occurred when a soldier on duty at the estate gate stopped a group of individuals attempting to force their way into the premises without undergoing routine security checks.

When the soldier demanded to know their identities and purpose, the group reportedly became aggressive and confrontational. The situation escalated into a violent struggle, during which the soldier—acting in self-defence—used his combat skills, injuring one of the individuals.

The injured suspect was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead. The incident was subsequently reported to the Otu-Jeremi Police Division for further investigation.

In a statement, Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Captain Iliya Bawa-Rijau, emphasized that the soldier’s action was in line with self-defence principles and operational guidelines.

He urged residents of Delta State to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security personnel by adhering to established security checks.

“The Brigade wishes to reiterate the importance of complying with standard operating procedures at all times. Respect for the fundamental human rights of citizens remains our priority while carrying out our statutory duties,” Bawa-Rijau stated.

The 63 Brigade assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining peace and security across Delta State.
