The Nigerian Armed Forces on Friday, 31st October 2025 held a grand Pulling Out Parade in honour of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), marking the end of a remarkable 39-year career in the Nigerian Army.
The colourful ceremony, held at the Mogadishu Cantonment Parade Ground, Abuja, drew top military brass, dignitaries, family members, and friends who gathered to celebrate a man widely respected for his professionalism, patriotism, and dedication to national security.
Delivering his valedictory address as the Special Guest of Honour, General Musa expressed profound gratitude to God, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the trust and opportunity to serve as the nation’s Chief of Defence Staff.
“This Pulling Out Parade is not just a ceremony; it is a sacred military tradition that marks the end of a journey of service that lasted over 39 years and the beginning of a new chapter in life. I am totally humbled as I reflect on the incredible privilege it has been to serve our great nation, Nigeria, in the noble profession of arms,” he said.
The retired Defence Chief also thanked President Tinubu for the “immeasurable honour and trust” reposed in him, while extending his best wishes and full support to his successor, Lieutenant General O.O. Oluyede, and other serving Service Chiefs.
“The security of our nation is in capable hands,” he noted, urging officers and men of the Armed Forces to remain loyal, steadfast, and committed to the defence of Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.
General Musa paid glowing tribute to his family, describing them as his “fortress and sanctuary” who endured the sacrifices of his long absences and deployments. He also saluted the courage and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces, calling them “the true heroes of our nation.”
“I have witnessed your raw courage in the face of danger, your resilience in the most arduous conditions, and your unwavering commitment to the unity and peace of Nigeria. You are the best of us,” he stated.
The former CDS also appreciated the Nigerian public, especially the youth, for their prayers and faith in a better and safer Nigeria. He commended the media for its partnership in promoting national security and lauded the synergy among security agencies.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, General Musa said he was leaving with “a clear conscience,” proud of his contributions to the nation’s peace and stability.
“I may be retiring from the Army, but I am not retiring from my love for Nigeria. I remain a soldier at heart, ever loyal to the Constitution and the flag of our great nation,” he declared.
In his closing remarks, General Musa expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Services for organising what he described as a “remarkable and lavish farewell ceremony,” while thanking God for divine protection throughout his military journey.
The ceremony featured a ceremonial parade, symbolic pulling-out rites, and the final march past, signifying the end of General Musa’s illustrious service to the nation.
“Long Live the Nigerian Armed Forces! Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!” he concluded to thunderous applause.
