The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed its willingness to partner with the National Institute of SportS (NIS) to revive sports in Nigeria, Director, Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau revealed in a press statement.
This was disclosed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, during a courtesy visit from the Director-General/CEO of NIS, Mr. Phillip Shaibu, on July 2, 2025.
General Musa highlighted the importance of sports in promoting human physical health and development, as well as reducing the risks of insecurity and criminality among youths.
He lamented the current state of sports in Nigeria, which he believes affects the country's overall development.
The CDS called on the NIS leadership to work towards revamping the image of sports in Nigeria.
In response, Mr. Shaibu stated that his visit is aimed at creating awareness, identifying key stakeholders, and explore areas of collaboration, particularly in training and coach development.
Mr. Shaibu emphasized that sports has the potential to compete with other sectors in the country and informed the CDS of the presidential directives to reactivate sporting activities in Nigeria.
