The Nigerian and American Navies are strengthening partnership to stabilize the Gulf of Guinea as the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, yesterday held bilateral talks with Admiral Lisa Franchetti, American Chief of Naval Operations (CNO).
Their bilateral engagements took place during the 14th Trans-Regional Seapower Symposium, in Venice, Italy, which focused on enhancing maritime cooperation, counter-piracy efforts, and US Navy ship visits.
Vice Admiral Ogalla presented on “Preserving the Underwater — The Secure and Sustainable Use of the Underwater,” highlighting Africa’s Blue Economy potential through the African Integrated Maritime Strategy (AIMS).
The CNS stressed the importance of collective action in securing the underwater, citing the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOSS). He noted that 60% of oceans lie outside national jurisdictions, necessitating shared responsibility.
The two naval leaders reaffirmed their enduring partnership, discussing US Navy ship visits, collaboration, and opportunities to enhance maritime cooperation. They also addressed counter-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Guinea.
In his remarks, Admiral Franchetti commended Vice Admiral Ogalla for Nigeria’s leadership in promoting maritime cooperation, particularly during exercises like OBANGAME Express.
The United States and Nigeria remain committed to fostering regional stability and enhancing collective security efforts.
