A High Court in Akwa Ibom State has sentenced Peter Ogban, a professor of soil science at the University of Calabar, to three years in prison for manipulating  results in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and it's candidate against the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial zone in 2019.

Ogban was the returning officer in the election and was prosecuted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The court found him guilty of changing results of the election to favour the APC against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On count one, the Presiding Judge of the court, Augustine Odokwo, ordered him to pay a fine of N100,000 while on count two he was sentenced to three years imprisonment without an option of a fine.

The university lecturer, before his sentence, pleaded for leniency regarding possible sentence from the judge.

Justice Odokwo however told him there was nothing he could do than allow the law take its normal course.
