The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have strengthened their operational capacity with the graduation of a new batch of trained drone pilots, in a move aimed at enhancing surveillance and combat efficiency.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Division Training School in Giginya Military Cantonment, marked a key milestone in the Division’s efforts to integrate modern technology into its operations.

Speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to improve force protection and mission success. He noted that drones provide critical advantages, including real-time intelligence gathering, risk reduction for troops, and improved resource management.

He emphasized that modern military effectiveness depends not just on acquiring advanced equipment but on integrating such tools seamlessly into operational strategies. According to him, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles is now essential in addressing contemporary security challenges.

Earlier, the Course Coordinator, Captain Samuel Yakubu, described the training programme as a strategic initiative designed to equip personnel with vital aerial surveillance skills. He disclosed that 27 personnel drawn from various formations within the Division’s area of responsibility underwent the intensive training.

The trainees were equipped with skills in drone navigation using offline maps, ground control station setup, aircraft assembly and handling, surveillance operations, and accurate coordinate acquisition, among others.

The programme culminated in a practical demonstration where the newly trained pilots showcased their capabilities through tactical maneuvers, surveillance operations, and precision landings.

Impressed by their performance, the GOC presented wings to the graduates and awarded cash prizes to outstanding participants in recognition of their excellence during the training.
