With the festive season drawing closer, a lot is
happening in the society. The recession seems to be
hitting people deeply as various ills in the society are
getting promoted.
The current state of the economy has led people
into their dooms as those who feel they have no
means of survival have gone into stealing. The
prices of things have tripled and people would
rather spend the little they earn on food items in
order to survive.
In line with this economic recession, a young girl
was caught stealing plantain at Agbowa market in
Agbowa-Ikosi, Lagos state. As grave as stealing is
as an offence, the news of this young lady’s action
was received with mixed emotions as she had her
baby in hand. She confessed to the crime by saying
hunger led her to commit the heinous offence.
The young mother at the police station
When the news of the arrest of this young lady
reached CP Fatai Owoseni, the commissioner of
police in Lagos state, he ordered for her to be
released and warned her sternly. The
commissioner of police also assisted her by giving
her the sum of N10,000.
It is touching to know that hunger pushed this
young lady into committing this crime as she was
saddled with the responsibility of providing for
her baby. It is indeed a sad situation. Only heaven
knows what will become of the young lady and her
child after they must have spent the money given
to them.
