The Joint Action Front, JAF, has called on the Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, to heed the demands of the students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU.
It asked the governor to learn from his Lagos counterpart, Babatunde Fashola and his administration, that “capitulated shamelessly to the reversal of the wicked (LASU) fees hike.”
Protest over the latest OUU tuition payment policy led to the shut down of the school last weekend following unsuccessful talks between the Students Union and the state government.
In a statement made available to DailyPost yesterday, Dr. Oladipo Fashina, JAF Chairperson and Comrade Abiodun Aremu, JAF Secretary, called for reduction of OOU fees to N50,000, its implementation from the current session, adequate funding of the University, immediate and unconditional re-opening of school and reversal of the proscription of the students umbrella body.
JAF explained that it is in total agreement with the demands by the OOU Students’ Union that the fee reduction regime announced by the government is too minimal because it does not translate into any fundamental relief to the vast majority of the students, who are from the background of the poor and working class families.
It pointed out that while medical students are still expected to pay N176,596, students of the Faculty of Arts would be paying N81,112.
