Authorities of the Ondo State-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, yesterday shut down the institution following a violent protest by the students over a hike in their school fees.
It was learnt that the students went on rampage after a students’ union stakeholders’ meeting was held on Sunday, where it was resolved to protest the conditions attached to writing exams and the recent unified test introduced by the management of the institution. Full time students, who are indigenes, are to pay N60, 000 while non-indigenes would pay 70,000.
Newly admitted students are to pay over 90, 000. It was gathered that the management had directed that students would commence a unified test yesterday with the condition that only students who have paid their fees would be allowed to write the test. The protesting students blocked the institution’s gate as early as 6.00am, preventing lecturers and other members of staff from gaining access into the campus.
The students barricaded the Benin-Abuja Expressway and stopped vehicular movement for several hours. Several school property, including the female hostel building, a new generation bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and some billboards were damaged by the students.
