The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with local divers and members of a fishing community, has rescued seven passengers following a boat mishap in Abedigbene waters, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2026, involving a passenger boat travelling from Yenagoa to Akassa with eight persons on board.
Among those rescued was the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr Ebieri Jones, alongside an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and five other passengers.
The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this in a press statement on Friday, November 6.
He said personnel of the Nigerian Navy's Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO swung into action after receiving a distress report from a local fisherman.
According to him, the naval personnel deployed at Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat promptly mobilised to the scene and commenced search and rescue operations with the assistance of local divers and members of the Abedigbene Fishing Community.
The seven survivors were subsequently taken to the houseboat, where they received first aid. Preliminary medical assessments indicated that none had visible injuries.
However, one passenger, identified as a police officer, remains missing, as search and rescue operations continue to locate the officer.
Folorunsho said the Commissioner and the six other survivors were conveyed to Yenagoa on Friday to reunite with their respective families.
He noted that the successful rescue operation demonstrated the Nigerian Navy's commitment to maritime safety, protection of lives and prompt response to emergencies within its area of responsibility.
The Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO commended the naval personnel for their swift response and professionalism, while acknowledging the critical support provided by local divers and members of the host community.
The Navy further emphasised the importance of collaboration between security agencies and coastal communities in enhancing maritime safety and preventing loss of lives in Nigeria's waterways.
