The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle, which claimed the life of a little girl and left another injured.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., when the police officer allegedly discharged his firearm during an operation to quell a violent clash between two rival groups.

The deceased, identified as Omole Taiwo, was reportedly hit by a bullet alongside another girl during the operation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that preliminary findings indicated that police personnel had been deployed following a distress call over a violent confrontation between two rival groups, identified as the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys.

The groups were reportedly engaged in a dispute over toll collection and armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

According to the statement, both girls were immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for medical attention. However, one of them was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she eventually died.

The second girl is currently receiving medical attention and is said to be in stable condition.

Reacting to the incident, the Command expressed deep sadness over the loss of the young girl, describing her death as tragic and extending its condolences to the bereaved family.

The police said ASP Olajide had been disarmed and detained, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.

It added that the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine appropriate legal and disciplinary actions.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, psc, mnips, was said to have personally visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assure them that justice would be served.

Fatai reiterated that no officer found culpable would be shielded, stressing that the Command remained committed to protecting lives and ensuring professionalism, transparency and accountability in the discharge of its duties.

The Command also urged members of the public with useful information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or its Public Relations Department.

It assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
