One year into his tenure as Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu’s leadership offers a compelling reminder that a nation’s military strength is measured not only by its victories on the battlefield, but also by the value it places on the lives of those who defend it.
Across Nigeria’s theatres of conflict, Army personnel continue to confront terrorism, insurgency, armed criminality and other threats to national peace. Through sustained combat engagements, intelligence-driven missions and closer cooperation with sister security agencies, troops have continued to disrupt hostile networks, reclaim threatened spaces, rescue captives and protect vulnerable communities. Behind every successful mission are the courage of the soldier, the sacrifice of the family waiting at home, and the resolve of commanders entrusted with the nation’s security.
At the centre of General Shaibu’s leadership is a simple but powerful conviction: the soldier must always come first. His welfare-driven approach recognises that a well-supported soldier is better positioned to withstand the demands of battle and fulfil the sacred duty of protecting the country. From improved living conditions and access to healthcare to adequate equipment, effective logistics and professional development, attention to personnel remains an essential investment in the Army’s fighting strength.
His PROSE philosophy—Professional Excellence, Robust Administration, Operational Readiness, Strategic Cooperation and Exemplary Leadership—provides the compass for this vision. It represents a call for discipline in conduct, efficiency in management, preparedness for emerging threats, unity among security partners and integrity at every level of command.
As the Nigerian Army reflects on this milestone, the greatest tribute belongs to the officers and soldiers who continue to serve with courage, often under difficult and dangerous circumstances. Their sacrifices give meaning to every operational success, while their welfare must remain inseparable from the institution’s pursuit of victory.
History will remember not merely the battles fought, but the lives protected, the communities reclaimed, and the soldiers empowered to stand firm in the defence of their homeland. As Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu marks one year at the helm of the Nigerian Army, his PROSE philosophy stands as a call to purposeful leadership, battlefield excellence, and an enduring commitment to the men and women in uniform.
The true measure of command lies in the strength it inspires, the sacrifices it honours, and the hope it restores to a nation yearning for peace. From the frontlines to the farthest corners of the country, every brave soldier deserves a leader who recognises that behind every uniform is a life, behind every mission is a sacrifice, and behind every victory is the courage of those who refuse to surrender to adversity.
One year of command. A legacy in motion. A soldier-first vision. An unyielding resolve for victory.
Congratulations, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. May your leadership continue to strengthen the Nigerian Army, honour the valour of its personnel, and advance the cause of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
