The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has assured residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, that it will engage relevant environmental and public health authorities to address concerns over an offensive odour and possible environmental impact following the recent aircraft crash in the area.
The Air Force gave the assurance in a statement issued by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, acknowledging the concerns and anxiety expressed by residents over the situation.
The NAF said it understood the discomfort and uncertainty faced by the affected community and was taking their concerns seriously.
According to the statement, search and recovery operations are still ongoing, with the Air Force working alongside relevant partner agencies to ensure the safe and orderly recovery of the aircraft wreckage.
It added that after the recovery operation is completed, the NAF would engage appropriate environmental and public health authorities, alongside other relevant agencies, to assess the situation and coordinate necessary measures to address any identified environmental concerns.
The Air Force reiterated its commitment to the wellbeing of residents, stressing that it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure appropriate action in the interest of public health, safety and environmental protection.
The assurance comes amid concerns in Igbokoda over an offensive odour reportedly emanating from the river where the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed.
The NAF said it remained committed to constructive engagement with the affected community and relevant agencies to address the concerns raised.
