Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, has formally commenced his diplomatic assignment in Greece following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to Greek President Constantine An. Tassoulas.
The ceremony was held at the Presidential Mansion in Athens on September 16, 2026, according to a statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.
The event was attended by senior Greek government officials, including the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, senior officials of the Presidency, the Chief of Protocol, the Director of the Military Office and the Director of the Diplomatic Office.
During the audience, Ambassador Ugwuanyi conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the Government and people of Nigeria, to President Tassoulas and the people of Greece.
Ugwuanyi reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between both countries, in line with the country’s foreign policy thrust anchored on the four Ds — Demography, Development, Diaspora and Democracy.
He identified shipping and the Blue Economy as key areas with potential to drive economic growth, promote maritime development and strengthen connectivity between Nigeria and Greece.
The ambassador also highlighted opportunities for deeper cooperation in trade and investment, energy, tourism and education, while stressing the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges in promoting mutual understanding.
Ugwuanyi expressed his readiness to work closely with the Greek Government to identify new areas of practical cooperation, strengthen institutional partnerships and encourage greater private-sector engagement.
The presentation of the Letters of Credence marks the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria-Greece diplomatic relations, with emphasis on converting longstanding ties into stronger economic partnerships and mutually beneficial outcomes.
