The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently attached to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.
The Army said it became aware of reports circulating online concerning the allegation and has initiated appropriate steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
In a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, the Army said it takes allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness. However, it cautioned against drawing conclusions on the culpability or otherwise of any individual while the investigation is ongoing.
The Army added that relevant civil authorities are also looking into the matter and assured that it would cooperate fully with them to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. It stressed that any personnel found to have violated the law or established service regulations would be dealt with appropriately, while urging the public to avoid speculation and the dissemination of unverified information, particularly information that could compromise the privacy and wellbeing of any minor involved.
