The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’, has handed over narcotics and pharmaceutical products worth N3.95 billion to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

The seizures, made through intelligence-led operations along borders and major roads, included 3,116.9kg of synthetic cannabis, cannabis products, crystal methamphetamine, Tramadol, Hypnox tablets and codeine syrup. Three suspected smugglers arrested in connection with the seizures were also handed over to the NDLEA.

Speaking at the handover in Ikeja, Lagos, Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘A’, Gambo Aliyu, said the seizures underscore the dangers posed by the illicit movement of controlled substances to public health and national security.

He said Customs would continue to strengthen collaboration with the NDLEA through intelligence sharing, joint operations and coordinated enforcement to disrupt the trafficking of drugs and other illicit goods.

The unit also intercepted four 34.5kg cylinders of high-grade mercury, allegedly linked to illegal gold mining. Aliyu said the hazardous chemical would be handed over to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) for appropriate action.

He assured that FOU Zone ‘A’ would sustain patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations to protect Nigerians while facilitating legitimate trade.
