Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled a major attack by Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, when a large number of terrorists attempted to overrun the military position.

According to the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Captain Mohammed Goni, troops responded with sustained fire, forcing the attackers to withdraw after suffering heavy casualties.

Several terrorists were reportedly neutralised during the engagement, while troops recovered weapons, ammunition and communication gadgets.

Surveillance footage reviewed after the encounter also showed several casualties being evacuated by the retreating terrorists.

The military, however, disclosed that some of its personnel sustained injuries after a section of the base’s defences was temporarily breached. Some combat equipment and vehicles were also damaged by Rocket Propelled Grenade fire.

The injured soldiers were subsequently airlifted and are said to be stable and receiving medical treatment.

Following the attack, troops have maintained a strong presence around the Forward Operating Base and adjoining areas to dominate the environment and prevent any further attempt by the terrorists to regroup or attack.

The Theatre Commander, Major General Abubakar urged residents of Gajiram and neighbouring communities to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, while encouraging them to report suspicious movements to security agencies or through the designated intelligence-sharing line.

The military said exploitation of the operational area and further assessment of the terrorists’ casualties and activities are ongoing.

Operation HADIN KAI also reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on ISWAP terrorists until lasting peace and stability are restored across the North East.
