The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 93 senior police officers to higher ranks, including the elevation of 13 Commissioners of Police (CPs) to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) and 17 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to Commissioners of Police.
The promotions were approved during the Commission’s Plenary Meeting held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the PSC Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, following the officers’ successful participation in the recently concluded written examination and oral interview.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Torty Njoku Kalu, the exercise forms part of the Commission’s commitment to strengthening leadership within the Nigeria Police Force through merit-based promotion.
Among the 13 Commissioners of Police elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police are Itam Nnaghe Obono (Counter Terrorism Unit), Bassey Samuel Ewah (Plateau State Command), Osagie John Agans-Irabor (FCID Lagos), Monday Agbonika (Edo State), Iyamah Daniel Adebor (Bayelsa State), Isa Danladi Nda (Abia State), Akaninyene Ezima (NPF-NCCC), Livingstein Ikioye Orutugu (Anambra State), Afegbua B. Rashid (Cross River State), Edozie Hycenth Azuka (AML/CFT, FCID), Haruna Alaba Yahaya (Jigawa State), Emenari Ifeanyi Innocent (Benue State) and Betty Enekpen Otimenyin (Police Welfare).
The Commission also promoted 17 Deputy Commissioners of Police to the rank of Commissioner of Police. The newly promoted officers include Nelson Nwamanna, Bolanle A. Murtala, Danbaba Mohammed Labbo, Ajayi Oluyemi, Oki Rita Oyintare, Ibrahim Umar Zungura, Iya Umar Mohammed, Darma Nuhu Na’aliyu, Nuruddeen A. Sabo, Tijjani Murtala, Yakubu Mohammed, Ibrahim Lukunche Usman, Akingbade C. Adeyinka, Mohammed Hassan Ahmed, Samuel Erale Ahmed, Adedeji Taiwo and Zainab A. Pembi.
In addition, the PSC elevated 28 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), while 33 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) were promoted to Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs). The Commission also confirmed the appointments of 162 Assistant Superintendents of Police II (ASP II) to the substantive rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police I (ASP I).
Speaking after the promotions, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, congratulated the officers and urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
Argungu advised the newly promoted officers to remain truthful and transparent while carrying out their responsibilities, cautioning them against involvement in civil disputes, particularly land-related matters.
He reminded the officers that their reputation and integrity should remain their greatest assets throughout their careers and beyond retirement.
“Guide your reputation and integrity. Let your actions speak for you and not against you,” the PSC Chairman said.
The latest promotions are expected to strengthen the leadership structure of the Nigeria Police Force and enhance operational efficiency across commands and formations nationwide.
