Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has arrived in Doha, Qatar, to officially assume duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Gulf nation.
Professor Yakubu, whose tenure as Nigeria’s chief electoral officer ended late last year, was among the diplomats appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a recent round of diplomatic postings.
The former INEC chairman was received on arrival at Hamad International Airport on Wednesday by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a demonstration of diplomatic goodwill, the reception party included 13 African ambassadors accredited to Qatar, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
Yakubu’s appointment marks a significant transition from electoral administration to diplomacy, placing him at the centre of Nigeria’s engagement with one of the Middle East’s most influential economic and geopolitical players.

His arrival comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to deepen economic cooperation with Qatar, particularly in the areas of energy, investment, trade and diaspora engagement.
Diplomatic observers note that one of the major priorities before the new ambassador will be strengthening collaboration between Nigeria and Qatar in the gas sector. With both countries ranking among the world’s leading natural gas producers, opportunities exist for enhanced cooperation under Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative and within the framework of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.

Yakubu is also expected to play a pivotal role in attracting Qatari investments into Nigeria’s economy. Analysts believe sectors such as agriculture, aviation, digital infrastructure, real estate and manufacturing offer significant opportunities for partnerships with Qatari investors.

Beyond economic diplomacy, the ambassador will be tasked with advancing Nigeria’s strategic interests in the Gulf region and strengthening bilateral cooperation on regional peace, security and development issues.
His role will also involve promoting the welfare of Nigerians residing in Qatar and facilitating stronger engagement between the Nigerian diaspora community and the Federal Government.

With Qatar increasingly emerging as a major global investment hub and diplomatic actor, stakeholders believe Professor Yakubu’s performance in Doha could contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic diplomacy agenda and efforts to attract foreign direct investment into the country.
