President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s First Military Head of State, Late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, describing him as a symbol of unity, courage, patriotism and selfless service whose legacy continues to inspire national development.
Represented by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, at the 60th Memorial Celebration held in Umuahia, Abia State, President Tinubu said General Aguiyi-Ironsi demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
The President noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi made history as the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army and later became Nigeria’s First Military Head of State, emphasizing that his leadership was defined by discipline, sacrifice and dedication to national service.
President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peace through justice, tolerance and mutual respect, stressing that the ideals exemplified by the late military leader remain relevant to nation-building.
He also conveyed the nation’s gratitude to the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and commended the organisers of the memorial for preserving the legacy of one of Nigeria’s foremost national heroes.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who also addressed the gathering, described General Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriotic officer who led the country during a turbulent period, urging Nigerians to honour his memory by protecting national unity and the integrity of the Armed Forces.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State thanked the Federal Government, military leadership and distinguished guests for honouring the late General, describing him as one of the state’s greatest sons whose courage and sacrifice for Nigeria continue to inspire good governance and national cohesion.
The memorial attracted prominent personalities, including former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd), serving and retired military officers, lawmakers and traditional rulers, with prayers offered for the Armed Forces, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and the continued peace and prosperity of Nigeria.
