The Nigerian Army has taken another significant step in strengthening its operational capacity in the South-East with the foundation laying ceremony for a 120-bed Army Medical Centre at the Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, was led by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, alongside the Governors of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Enugu States.
The project is aimed at enhancing the Army’s medical support infrastructure, improving healthcare delivery for personnel, and reinforcing operational readiness across the South-East geopolitical zone.
Speaking at the event, the COAS described the medical centre as a strategic investment that will strengthen the Army’s capacity to sustain operations while ensuring troops receive quality healthcare during training and deployment.
The 120-bed facility is expected to serve as a comprehensive medical hub for soldiers, particularly personnel undergoing training at the Depot, while also providing medical support for ongoing and future military operations in the region.
Designed with both military and civilian needs in mind, the hospital will be located outside the Depot to allow surrounding communities access to quality healthcare services, further strengthening civil-military relations.
The medical centre will feature emergency units, surgical theatres, intensive care units, diagnostic laboratories, outpatient and specialist clinics, dedicated wards for men, women and children, as well as a psychiatric unit to provide treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other operational stress-related conditions.
The South-East governors commended the initiative, describing it as a landmark project that will enhance regional security, improve healthcare delivery and stimulate socio-economic development within the host communities.
They noted that the facility reflects the growing collaboration between state governments and the Nigerian Army in promoting peace, security and sustainable development in the region.
The groundbreaking ceremony underscores the Nigerian Army’s continued investment in expanding its operational support infrastructure, improving troop welfare and strengthening its presence to effectively address emerging security challenges across the country.
