The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, have commended the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for launching its maiden Skill Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers, describing the initiative as a strategic investment in the welfare, resilience and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held in Abuja on Monday, July 20, 2026, IGP Disu praised the Executive Secretary, management and board of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for initiating the programme, noting that it demonstrates a clear understanding of the vital role families play in strengthening policing in Nigeria.
The Inspector-General said the programme goes beyond the distribution of empowerment items and vocational support, stressing that it represents a deliberate investment in the stability and wellbeing of police families.
According to him, behind every committed police officer is a supportive spouse whose sacrifices, encouragement and resilience enable officers to carry out their constitutional responsibilities despite the demanding nature of policing.
The IGP paid glowing tribute to the wives of junior police officers for their patience and steadfast support, acknowledging the challenges they endure during prolonged deployments and operational assignments.
He emphasised that the welfare of police personnel cannot be separated from the welfare of their families, adding that economically empowered families contribute significantly to the morale, motivation and operational effectiveness of officers.
IGP Disu urged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunities provided through the programme by acquiring practical skills that would promote financial independence, sustainable livelihoods and long-term prosperity for their households.
He also expressed appreciation to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for its consistent support towards enhancing both the welfare and operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, while thanking partners contributing to the vision of building a more professional, motivated and service-oriented police institution.
Earlier, the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a historic milestone that offers renewed hope and economic empowerment to hundreds of police families across the country.
She commended the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for recognising that supporting national security begins with supporting the families of those who safeguard the nation, while also acknowledging the Inspector-General of Police for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of officers and their families.
Chief Mrs. Disu noted that the programme aligns closely with POWA’s vision of improving the welfare of police families through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship development, healthcare interventions, educational support and assistance to widows and other vulnerable families.
She stressed that sustainable welfare can only be achieved through collaboration, describing the partnership between the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, the Nigeria Police Force and POWA as a model worthy of emulation by government institutions, development partners and corporate organisations.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the POWA President encouraged them to approach the training with discipline, commitment and excellence, urging them to transform the acquired skills into thriving businesses capable of improving the economic fortunes of their families and communities.
She further assured the Nigeria Police Trust Fund of POWA’s continued support through its network of state chairpersons to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the programme across the federation.
Chief Mrs. Disu expressed optimism that the initiative would reach more police families nationwide, reiterating that stronger police families remain the foundation of a stronger, more professional Police Force and a safer, more prosperous Nigeria.
The maiden Skill Acquisition and Empowerment Programme is designed to equip spouses of junior police officers with vocational and entrepreneurial skills aimed at improving household income, promoting self-reliance and strengthening family resilience, in line with ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of police personnel and their dependants.
