The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening sports development within the Nigeria Police Force, promising increased investment in sporting associations and improved welfare for police athletes.

The assurance came during an unscheduled visit to the Nigeria Police volleyball team competing at the 3rd Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Volleyball Premier League in Abuja, where the IGP watched the team record an impressive straight-set victory over Sunshine Spikers.

The Police team delivered a dominant performance, defeating Sunshine Spikers 3-0 with scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-14.

Speaking after the match, IGP Disu commended the players for their discipline, resilience and determination, noting that they had excelled despite limited training resources.

“You have seen the tenacity of a policeman in action. I am so happy to have been here today, and they have made me so happy,” he said.

“They have done so well. How else can I honour them? By owning the sport and sponsoring it. Definitely, we will do something like this, not only for volleyball but for judo and every other sport.”

The Inspector-General assured the athletes that the Force would continue to provide the necessary support and resources to enable them compete successfully at national and international levels.

“I can’t be the Inspector-General of Police and my men are doing well and not looking forward to the future. I will endeavour to ensure that I encourage them. How do I encourage them? By giving them everything that we know,” he added.

The visit underscores the IGP’s commitment to promoting sports as a tool for enhancing physical fitness, teamwork, discipline and morale among police personnel, while reaffirming the Force’s resolve to invest in the development of sporting talents across its various associations.
