The Ekiti State Police Command has commenced full enforcement of the Inspector-General of Police’s directive prohibiting the use of vehicles without registration number plates or with deliberately obscured number plates, leading to the arrest and arraignment of 17 motorists.
The enforcement exercise, which began on June 22, 2026, is being implemented under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, as part of efforts to strengthen security and improve compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the operation aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to curb the use of unregistered and concealed vehicles, which are often exploited by criminals to evade law enforcement.
During the statewide operation, police operatives intercepted 17 vehicles found operating without registration number plates or with covered registration numbers in violation of existing laws.
The Command disclosed that after thorough screening and investigation, the offenders were charged before courts of competent jurisdiction for prosecution in line with relevant legal provisions.
Explaining the objective of the exercise, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal stressed that the enforcement was not designed to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to reinforce public safety and strengthen the state’s security architecture.
He noted that properly registered and clearly displayed vehicle number plates remain vital tools for intelligence gathering, crime investigation, and the prompt identification and tracking of vehicles used in criminal activities.
The Commissioner urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and fitted with valid, visible registration number plates at all times while complying with all existing traffic regulations.
He also called on residents to cooperate with police officers in the lawful discharge of their duties and continue supporting security agencies with credible information.
The Ekiti State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led and proactive policing, assuring residents that the enforcement exercise will continue across the state as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime, enhance public confidence in policing, and advance the vision of the Inspector-General of Police for a safer Nigeria.
Residents were also encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or security concerns to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency response lines.
