The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has commended the Sokoto State Government for procuring armoured vehicles and other security equipment, describing the initiative as a strategic investment that will strengthen the state’s security architecture and support ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes.
Speaking at the commissioning of the newly acquired security assets in Sokoto on Wednesday, the Defence Minister said the investment reflected responsible leadership and a shared commitment between the Federal and State Governments to improve security across the country.
General Musa praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu for complementing the efforts of the Federal Government and the Armed Forces of Nigeria, stressing that security remains the foundation for national development and economic prosperity.
He said the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises the restoration of peace, protection of lives and property, and the creation of a secure environment for economic growth, agricultural productivity and increased investment.
According to the Minister, tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges requires a whole-of-government approach, with collaboration among the Federal Government, state governments, security agencies and local communities.
“The security situation continues to evolve as criminal and terrorist elements constantly adapt their methods. Our response must equally evolve through improved mobility, enhanced force protection, better intelligence, modern technology and stronger collaboration among all security stakeholders,” he said.
General Musa noted that the newly commissioned armoured vehicles and security equipment would significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of security agencies in Sokoto State by improving rapid response capabilities, operational mobility and force protection.
He added that the investment sends a clear message that governments at all levels are determined to deny criminal elements the freedom to threaten the lives and livelihoods of citizens.
The Defence Minister also commended the Sokoto State Government for supporting community-based security initiatives aimed at fostering greater public participation in safeguarding communities.
He emphasised that security is a collective responsibility requiring trust, vigilance, intelligence sharing and sustained cooperation between security agencies and the public.
“Every investment in security is an investment in development. Without peace, there can be no meaningful progress in agriculture, education, healthcare, commerce or infrastructure,” he stated.
While applauding the acquisition of the security assets, General Musa cautioned that equipment alone cannot guarantee lasting peace, stressing that professionalism, discipline, intelligence-led operations and effective inter-agency coordination remain critical to achieving sustainable security.
He also highlighted the important roles of traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and citizens in supporting security operations through timely information and cooperation.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to improving national security, the Minister assured Nigerians that government would continue to enhance the welfare of security personnel, strengthen intelligence capabilities, invest in modern technology and deepen collaboration among security agencies.
Addressing personnel who will operate the newly commissioned equipment, General Musa urged them to utilise the assets responsibly, professionally and in accordance with the rule of law.
He called on them to justify the confidence reposed in them through discipline, accountability and selfless service to the nation.
The Minister concluded by congratulating Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the Sokoto State Government and the people of the state for what he described as a commendable investment that would reinforce public confidence, strengthen security operations and contribute to lasting peace, stability and sustainable development.
