Fourth Evacuation Flight Brings 282 Nigerians Home from South Africa

The Federal Government has successfully evacuated another 282 Nigerian nationals from South Africa, bringing the total number of citizens repatriated amid the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country to 1,141.

The fourth evacuation flight, operated by Air Peace, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday with the returnees on board.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development in a statement issued by its Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, noting that the evacuation exercise remains part of the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Nigerians affected by the violence in South Africa.

According to the ministry, the latest batch of evacuees increases the total number of Nigerians successfully returned home through the ongoing evacuation programme to 1,141.

The ministry further disclosed that a fifth and final evacuation flight has been scheduled for next week to bring back the remaining registered Nigerian nationals wishing to return from South Africa.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to protecting the lives and interests of Nigerians abroad while continuing diplomatic engagements aimed at addressing the recurring incidents of xenophobic violence in South Africa.
