The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the media, describing defence correspondents as critical partners in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, particularly asymmetric warfare.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, the minister said the military requires the support of the media to ensure Nigerians receive timely, accurate and credible information on defence and security matters.
General Musa noted that effective communication is essential in countering misinformation and building public confidence in the Armed Forces.
“The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will continue to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with the media and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public,” he said.
The minister assured the association that the Ministry of Defence would carefully review the proposals presented by DECAN and immediately implement those considered feasible.
He also urged defence correspondents to uphold the principles of fairness, balance and professionalism in their reportage, stressing that responsible journalism remains vital to national security and public trust.
“We encourage defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional in their reportage, as responsible journalism is vital to national security and public trust,” Musa added.
Earlier, DECAN President, Odita Sunday, congratulated General Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as a recognition of his professionalism, competence and outstanding service to Nigeria.
He announced that the association had resolved to confer on the minister the title of Grand Patron of DECAN during its Conference and Awards Ceremony scheduled for October 2026.
According to him, the event will also witness the launch of the association’s quarterly publication titled “Defence Correspondents.”
“Your appointment is a testament to your years of dedicated service, professionalism and commitment to the security of our nation. We are honoured to confer on you the title of Grand Patron of DECAN in recognition of your support for defence journalism,” Odita said.
The DECAN president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to responsible and ethical journalism while commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for the sacrifices made by its personnel in defending the nation’s territorial integrity and combating terrorism, banditry and other security threats.
He further appealed for enhanced collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents through regular media engagements and timely dissemination of defence-related information.
Odita noted that stronger cooperation would not only improve public confidence in the Armed Forces but also promote patriotism and ensure Nigerians have access to credible, accurate and timely information on the activities of the Ministry of Defence.
