Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have restored calm following a protest by youths in Mangu Town, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, over the alleged killing of a herder in the area.

Security sources said the troops responded swiftly at about 9:20 a.m. on June 15 after receiving reports of a protest involving youths from the Hausa community.

The unrest was reportedly triggered by the killing of a herder identified as Ibrahim Bappa, allegedly by youths from another community, leading to heightened tensions in the area.

Further reports indicated that the situation escalated after the body of the deceased was returned to the community from the Central Mosque and identified as being of Hausa extraction, which sparked the protest.

Troops were immediately deployed to the scene and successfully brought the situation under control, preventing further escalation and breakdown of law and order.

Security personnel have since dominated the general area to maintain peace and forestall any reprisal attacks or renewed unrest.

Authorities said preliminary investigations into the incident are ongoing, while normalcy has gradually returned to the area.
