The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the death of three security operatives following an attack by unidentified gunmen on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, on behalf of the command.
According to the statement, the slain operatives were on duty at Nigeria’s foremost policy and leadership training institution when the attackers struck.
“The Plateau State Police Command, on a very sad note, wishes to confirm the incident that occurred in the early hours of today, June 16, 2026, involving security personnel on duty at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru,” the statement read.
“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident.”
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to the area. The command said patrols have been intensified around the institution and surrounding communities to prevent further security breaches.
“Security reinforcements have been deployed, and patrols have been intensified around the general area,” Alabo stated.
The police assured residents that the situation has been brought under control and that normal activities have resumed in the area.
“The situation is under control and normal activities have resumed,” the statement added.
The command disclosed that investigations into the incident are ongoing and urged members of the public to remain calm while security agencies work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“Investigation is ongoing. The command urges members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses,” the police spokesman said.
Authorities also pledged to provide further updates as investigations progress.
NIPSS, located in Kuru, Plateau State, is Nigeria’s premier institution for policy research and strategic leadership training for senior public officials. The attack is regarded as one of the most significant security breaches recorded at the facility in recent years.
