The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has stressed that synergy among the Armed Forces is no longer optional but a strategic necessity for achieving mission success in today’s complex security environment.
Speaking during a lecture titled “Military Strategic Leadership: My Perspective” to participants of Air War Course 12/2026 at the Air Force War College Nigeria (AFWCN), Makurdi, on Monday, Air Marshal Aneke urged future military commanders to embrace strategic leadership, innovation and jointness as key pillars for operational effectiveness.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed in a statement that the participants comprised senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, alongside allied officers from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.
According to the CAS, the evolving nature of modern warfare requires leaders with foresight, adaptability and a collaborative mindset capable of translating national strategic objectives into operational success.
“Synergy is not optional; it is a strategic necessity,” Air Marshal Aneke stated, explaining that integrated planning and coordinated execution enable commanders to achieve operational effects beyond the capability of any single Service. He noted that the deliberate integration of air power with surface forces remains central to addressing contemporary security challenges.
Highlighting his command philosophy, the Air Chief said the Nigerian Air Force is focused on building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering effective air power in synergy with surface forces to achieve national security objectives.
He explained that the vision is being pursued through mission-focused training, personnel development, innovation, strategic partnerships and a proactive approach to sustaining operational readiness.
The CAS also underscored the importance of strategic leadership, noting that effective leaders must anticipate future challenges rather than merely reacting to emerging threats.
Emphasising the human dimension of military capability, Air Marshal Aneke reminded participants that the strength of any Air Force ultimately lies in its personnel.
He urged the officers to cultivate strategic thinking, ethical leadership, emotional intelligence and a lifelong commitment to professional development while fostering trust across Services and with partner nations to strengthen joint operations.
The lecture concluded with an interactive session where participants exchanged ideas with the Chief of the Air Staff on strategic leadership, joint operations and the future of warfare.
The discussions reinforced the need for greater interoperability and joint force integration, reflecting the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to developing strategic leaders capable of delivering effective air power in collaboration with sister Services and international partners in support of national security objectives.
