The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between traditional institutions, security agencies, and local communities to promote peace, security, and development across the country.
The IGP made the call on Monday during a working visit to Jigawa State, where he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi, attended the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Dutse, and addressed officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP commended the council, led by Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for its role in fostering dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and national unity.
Addressing the gathering, Disu emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, community engagement, and early warning mechanisms. He noted that closer cooperation between traditional institutions and security agencies remains critical to tackling insecurity and driving development, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
During his meeting with Governor Namadi, the police chief reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to working closely with the Jigawa State Government and other stakeholders to strengthen security, public safety, and community policing initiatives across the state.
Speaking to officers and personnel of the Jigawa State Police Command, Disu praised their dedication to maintaining peace and order and assured them that the Force leadership remains committed to improving operational capacity, personnel welfare, career development, and service delivery.
The Inspector-General also addressed concerns surrounding ongoing discussions on the proposed establishment of state police, assuring officers that the reform would not jeopardize their careers, pensions, welfare packages, or other accrued benefits.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s policing architecture while preserving a strong national police institution capable of responding effectively to interstate and national security challenges.
Disu further urged officers to remain professional, disciplined, and committed to their constitutional responsibilities, stressing that the Force would continue to maintain a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct.
He encouraged personnel to embrace intelligence-led policing, deepen community engagement, and uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect for human rights.
The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to building public trust, enhancing operational effectiveness, and collaborating with governments, traditional institutions, communities, and other stakeholders to advance peace, security, and national development.
