As Nigeria continues to confront the challenges of crime, drug abuse, cultism and other social vices, the Nigeria Police Force is increasingly embracing proactive measures aimed at preventing crime before it occurs. One of such initiatives is the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), a non-kinetic crime prevention programme established by the Nigeria Police Force to engage communities, particularly young people, through education, mentorship and strategic partnerships.
Speaking on the initiative, the National Coordinator of POCACOV, SP Orvenonne Ikwen, described the programme as a bridge between vulnerable young people and the challenges that often push them toward criminal activities. According to her, POCACOV is focused on creating awareness and providing alternative pathways that encourage positive choices and responsible citizenship.
The programme aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who has consistently emphasized that effective policing is built on public trust, collaboration and community partnership. Beyond law enforcement, the Police recognize the importance of nurturing emotionally healthy, disciplined and confident young people who can contribute positively to society.
Through school outreaches, community engagements and stakeholder consultations, POCACOV works closely with traditional rulers, religious leaders, parents, teachers, civil society organisations, government agencies and the private sector. These collaborations have helped expand the initiative's reach across the country, empowering young people to reject cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, violence and other forms of criminality.
A key aspect of POCACOV's approach is direct engagement with youths. The initiative creates platforms where young people can openly discuss their challenges, receive guidance and learn about the consequences of criminal behaviour. By promoting education, entrepreneurship, leadership and mentorship, POCACOV seeks to channel youthful energy into productive ventures that contribute to national development.
The initiative also recognizes that idleness often creates opportunities for negative influences to thrive. As such, it advocates for programmes and interventions that keep young people meaningfully engaged while equipping them with life skills and opportunities for personal growth. According to SP Ikwen, lasting security begins long before a crime is committed; it starts with awareness, mentorship and the provision of viable alternatives to crime.
As Nigeria strives to build safer and more peaceful communities, POCACOV continues to serve as a practical expression of community policing. Its message remains clear: security is everyone's responsibility. By working together to guide, support and empower young people, communities can help create a future where crime is prevented, opportunities are expanded and the next generation is inspired to become agents of positive change.
