Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security cooperation as top defence and security officials from both countries convened for the Fourth United Kingdom–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue (SDP4) at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja.
The high-level engagement was attended by Nigeria’s Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, heads of security agencies, and senior officials from the United Kingdom, led by UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell. Discussions focused on counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, cybersecurity, strategic communications, maritime security, capacity building, and regional stability.
Speaking at the opening session, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu described the UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership as a cornerstone of the broader strategic relationship between both countries. He noted that the partnership is built on mutual trust, shared interests, and a collective commitment to peace, security, and prosperity.
Ribadu emphasized that emerging threats such as terrorism, cybercrime, artificial intelligence-enabled attacks, foreign information manipulation, and organized criminal networks require innovative and coordinated responses among trusted international partners.
Echoing this position, UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell described the partnership as a mature and equal relationship focused on practical delivery and measurable outcomes. He stressed that both countries are working together to address regional instability, cyber threats, disinformation campaigns, and illicit financial activities.
Since its inauguration in London in 2022, the Security and Defence Partnership has evolved into a comprehensive framework covering defence engagement, intelligence cooperation, law enforcement collaboration, counter-terrorism, cyber resilience, strategic communications, and maritime security.
A review conducted ahead of the fourth dialogue highlighted significant achievements, including enhanced intelligence sharing, strengthened counter-terrorism coordination, improved aviation security, expanded cyber resilience initiatives, and more effective disruption of terrorist financing networks.
The partnership has also contributed to strengthening Nigeria’s whole-of-government approach to tackling insecurity through collaboration among defence institutions, intelligence agencies, law enforcement bodies, and financial intelligence organizations.
Participants at the dialogue reiterated the importance of regional cooperation in addressing security challenges across West Africa and the Sahel, including terrorism, arms trafficking, organized crime, and humanitarian crises.
The Fourth UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue is expected to further consolidate cooperation between both nations, with renewed commitments to strengthening institutions, enhancing public safety, and building resilience against evolving security threats.
