Nigeria Police Mourn Former AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu, Hail His Distinguished Service

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the death of retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Kanayo V. Uzuegbu, who passed away on May 30, 2026, after more than three decades of service to the nation.


In a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the Force described the late senior officer as a dedicated and accomplished professional whose career was defined by exemplary leadership, commitment to public safety and unwavering service to Nigeria.


A native of Umuaka in Njaba Local Government Area, Uzuegbu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after undergoing training at Police Academy Kaduna.


The late officer held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, a Higher Diploma in Strategic Studies and a Master’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. He also obtained several professional certifications in counter-terrorism, human rights, law of armed conflict and strategic leadership.


During his distinguished career, Uzuegbu served in several key operational and administrative positions across the country. His appointments included Squadron Commander of No. 15 Police Mobile Force in Ilorin, Area Commander in Owerri and Karu, Director of the Central Planning Training Unit at the Police Staff College in Jos, Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations Communication at Force Headquarters in Abuja, and Commissioner of Police for Enugu State Command.


He also represented Nigeria in international peacekeeping missions, serving as Commander of Sector 8 of the African Peace-Keeping Mission in El-Dain, Darfur, Sudan.


The Nigeria Police Force said the late AIG brought honour to the institution through his professionalism and dedication, noting that his contributions to policing and national security would be remembered for years to come.


The Force extended its condolences to his family, friends and associates, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength and comfort for his loved ones during this period of mourning.
