The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by kidnappers.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, described the late senior officer as a distinguished soldier whose contributions to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the nation would be remembered for years to come.
According to the statement, Major General Abubakar served in several key appointments during his military career, including as spokesman for various military formations and Director of Defence Information, where he served as the spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Defence Headquarters noted that the late officer made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional development of the military, and national security efforts.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria convey its deepest sympathies to the Abubakar family, his colleagues and all Nigerians. His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the AFN,” the statement said.
DHQ explained that it had refrained from making public comments on the abduction out of respect for ongoing rescue efforts being undertaken by the military and other security agencies.
“The Defence Headquarters withheld public comment on his abduction in deference to ongoing rescue efforts by the AFN and sister security agencies. Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” the statement added.
The military said the tragic loss has further strengthened its determination to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the AFN. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens,” the statement said.
The Defence Headquarters also disclosed that ongoing operations against criminal and terrorist groups have been intensified following a series of abductions across the country, including that of the late retired general.
It assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces would continue to pursue those responsible for terrorist activities and criminal violence until lasting peace and security are restored nationwide.
“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the statement concluded.
