Operation HADIN KAI Thwarts Suspected ISWAP Plot, Reinforces Security Around Key Military Formations

The sustained intelligence-driven counter-terrorism campaign of Operation HADIN KAI has recorded another significant breakthrough with the arrest of a suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) operative allegedly linked to a planned attack on two key military formations in Borno State.

The operation highlights the growing importance of intelligence gathering and proactive security measures in preventing terrorist attacks before they are executed, reflecting the evolving strategy of Nigerian troops in the North-East theatre of operations.

The suspect, identified as Muhammad Shuaibu, was apprehended by troops of the 212 Battalion deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Chabbol following credible human intelligence indicating an imminent terrorist attack against military positions.

Military sources disclosed that the suspect was arrested at approximately 7:55 a.m. on June 26 during a routine perimeter patrol conducted about 500 metres ahead of the anti-vehicle ditch protecting the base. The patrol formed part of the layered defensive measures routinely employed to secure military installations against insurgent incursions.

Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect had links to a planned ISWAP operation targeting the 199 Special Forces Battalion, popularly known as Mosquito Camp, as well as Forward Operating Base Chabbol.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted knowledge of the planned attack and disclosed that the terrorists intended to proceed with the operation regardless of his arrest. The revelation provided valuable intelligence that enabled military commanders to immediately reinforce security around the identified targets and enhance defensive preparedness against any possible assault.

Military authorities said the timely interception of the suspect significantly strengthened force protection measures and demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating human intelligence with routine combat patrols to detect and neutralise emerging threats.

The suspect has since been handed over to the 7 Military Intelligence Brigade for comprehensive investigation and intelligence exploitation aimed at identifying other members of the terrorist network and preventing future attacks.

Security experts note that disrupting terrorist planning cycles before attacks are launched remains one of the most effective counter-insurgency strategies. Intelligence-led operations not only prevent potential casualties but also degrade insurgents’ operational capabilities by exposing their networks, surveillance activities and internal communications.

The latest arrest underscores Operation HADIN KAI’s continued emphasis on proactive intelligence operations, surveillance and rapid response capabilities designed to dismantle terrorist cells, frustrate planned attacks and safeguard military formations and civilian communities across the North-East.

As military operations continue across the theatre, the successful interception serves as another indication that sustained intelligence gathering, vigilance and coordinated field operations remain central to Nigeria’s efforts to defeat insurgency and deny terrorist groups the freedom to plan and execute attacks.
