One such effort is the intensified farm protection patrols being conducted by troops of Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY) across vulnerable communities in Bukuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
For years, farmers in many parts of Zamfara have faced persistent threats from armed bandits who exploit remote farmlands and rural routes to carry out attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling. These security concerns have forced many residents to abandon their farms, reducing agricultural productivity and deepening economic hardship in communities that depend heavily on farming.
The renewed patrols by Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY) troops represent more than just a military operation; they are a strategic intervention aimed at restoring confidence among farmers and creating a secure environment for agricultural activities.
Under the command of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna the initiative reflects a broader shift toward community-focused security operations. Rather than concentrating solely on offensive actions against criminal groups, security forces are increasingly adopting measures that directly support civilian populations and protect critical economic activities. Farm protection patrols exemplify this approach by addressing one of the root causes of rural insecurity—the inability of communities to safely sustain their livelihoods.
By maintaining a visible presence in farming communities and along key access routes to farmlands, troops are helping to deter criminal elements and reassure residents that their safety remains a priority.
