The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the state to provide maximum security for churches, mosques, schools and correctional centres as part of efforts to strengthen public safety.
The directive was issued during a high-level strategic meeting held on Wednesday with senior officers of the command to address issues relating to security, discipline and professional conduct.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the meeting was attended by members of the Command Management Team, Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, DPOs and Heads of Departments.
During the meeting, the police commissioner stressed the need for strict compliance with the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force. He warned that professional misconduct by any officer would not be tolerated, adding that supervising officers would be held vicariously liable for the actions of officers under their command.
CP Oyeniyi also expressed concern over what he described as inadequate community engagement by some DPOs. He directed all divisional heads to actively engage critical stakeholders within their areas of responsibility and sensitise residents on the need to remain security conscious.
The commissioner further noted a rise in murder cases across the state and urged DPOs to intensify community-based efforts aimed at discouraging actions and disputes that could escalate into violence and loss of lives.
As part of measures to improve security, he ordered Area Commanders and DPOs to identify all schools, churches, mosques and correctional facilities within their jurisdictions and ensure regular visits and adequate protection.
The CP also charged officers to maintain a high standard of appearance and professionalism, directing that all personnel must appear neat, smart and properly dressed at all times.
He warned that any officer found without a name tag on their uniform or approved tactical vest would face sanctions, while their supervising officer would equally be held accountable.
The meeting, according to the command, forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen discipline and improve policing standards across Delta State.
