Troops, Faith and Firearms: The Powerful Image Symbolising Peace in Nigeria’s North East By Olayemi Esan

In a region long scarred by insurgency, fear and displacement, one photograph has emerged as a powerful symbol of hope, resilience and the gradual return of normalcy in Nigeria’s troubled North East.

The image of heavily armed troops of look Operation HADIN KAI kneeling in prayer alongside civilians and vigilantes inside a mosque during Eid El Adha celebrations is more than just a routine security snapshot — it is a profound representation of sacrifice, unity and the evolving face of counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria.

At first glance, the picture captures a striking contrast: rifles carefully laid on the floor while soldiers bow their heads in worship. Yet beyond the symbolism of weapons beside prayer mats lies a deeper national message — that the battle against terrorism is not only fought with firepower, but also with faith, discipline, community trust and shared humanity.

The troops, deployed under Operation DESERT SANITY V/SIEGE OPERATIONS, had provided security for Muslim faithful observing Eid prayers in Ngoshe community and Gwoza town, areas once heavily threatened by Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks. Their participation in the prayers alongside residents and vigilantes reflects growing public confidence in the military’s presence and the gradual restoration of peace in communities previously overrun by insurgents.

This image is particularly significant because it tells the story of reclaimed spaces. Mosques that once echoed with fear now host congregational prayers protected by Nigerian troops. Communities once deserted are slowly returning to life under the watch of security forces determined to sustain operational gains.

The Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI described the development as part of ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe return of displaced persons and strengthen civil-military relations across the North East. Indeed, the photograph visually communicates what military briefings and statistics sometimes fail to capture — the human side of security operations.

Equally symbolic is the presence of vigilantes and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) alongside the troops. It highlights the growing cooperation between the military and local communities in denying terrorists freedom of action.

Beyond the Eid celebrations, Operation HADIN KAI also recorded operational successes with the arrest of suspected criminals and terrorist collaborators in parts of Borno State, including Biu and Monguno. Recovered items included weapons, charms, cash and stolen property, underscoring the continued intelligence-driven operations ongoing across the theatre.

However, it is the image itself that may remain the defining story.

In conflict reporting, photographs often become historical markers. This particular picture captures a rare and emotional moment where soldiers momentarily set aside their weapons to bow before God, even while remaining prepared to defend the nation. It portrays troops not merely as fighters, but as protectors of both lives and values.

For many Nigerians, especially those in conflict-affected communities, the image sends a reassuring message: that peace, though fragile, is gradually taking root again in parts of the North East.

And perhaps most importantly, it reminds the nation that even in the middle of conflict, faith and hope still endure.
