“ Terrorist Multiple Aliases Part of Indoctrination Strategy” - DHQ Clarifies Identity of Neutralised Terrorist Commander Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified concerns surrounding the recent neutralisation of terrorist commander Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki during a joint operation conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States Africa Command on May 16, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military said recent public discourse arose after some media reports referenced a similar operation in 2024 involving a terrorist commander bearing the same name.

According to the DHQ, the development had generated questions regarding the identity of the terrorist commander recently eliminated in the Lake Chad Basin operation.

The statement explained that the use of similar or identical names, aliases, and nom de guerres is common among members of ISWAP and Boko Haram operating across the North-East and the wider Lake Chad region.

The military noted that the practice forms part of the terrorist groups’ indoctrination strategy aimed at concealing identities and complicating intelligence tracking during counterterrorism operations.

“The Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki eliminated on May 16, 2026, has been positively identified through human intelligence and technical surveillance as a senior global operative within the Islamic State network, with direct links to international terrorist coordination, funding, and operations across the Sahel,” the statement said.

The DHQ stressed that there was no ambiguity regarding the identity of the slain commander, describing the operation as a significant milestone in ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

The military further reaffirmed its commitment, alongside the United States, to dismantling terrorist networks operating within the region and urged the public and media organisations to rely only on verified official information to avoid confusion arising from similarities in terrorist aliases.

The clarification follows widespread attention surrounding the joint Nigeria–US operation that reportedly targeted a terrorist enclave within the Lake Chad Basin and eliminated several extremist commanders.
