The Nigeria Police Force has launched a manhunt for a driver and two vigilante members linked to the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. Police authorities said the suspects remain at large, as tactical teams have been deployed to track them down and bring them to justice.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed this during a press briefing on Sunday, stating that the officers have also been handed over for prosecution following the conclusion of internal investigations.
Incident Details
According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after Ogidi received a parcel sent from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. He reportedly took the package to a motor park to forward it to Sapele.
The parcel was searched by concerned citizens and allegedly found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition. The witnesses subsequently carried out a citizen’s arrest and alerted the police.
ASP Nuhu, who led the responding team, was said to have taken custody of the suspect. However, in what the police described as a breach of rules of engagement, the officer allegedly shot and killed the already apprehended and unarmed suspect.
Investigation Findings
The Force said a probe by the Police Monitoring Unit found the actions of ASP Nuhu and his team to constitute professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, resulting in the unlawful killing of Ogidi.
“The Force wishes to be unequivocal: no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action,” the police spokesman said, emphasizing that all suspects are entitled to due process.
Disciplinary Actions
Following the investigation, ASP Nuhu and three other officers were arrested. The Police Service Commission has approved their dismissal from service with immediate effect.
The case file has also been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution, with the police pledging full cooperation to ensure justice is served.
Manhunt Ongoing
Police authorities further revealed that the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members involved in the incident are currently at large. Tactical teams have been deployed to track and arrest them.
Police Assure Justice
The Nigeria Police Force assured the public and the family of the deceased that justice would be pursued without compromise.
“No rank, no position, and no circumstance will place any officer above accountability,” the statement said.
The police also urged Nigerians to remain calm and continue to cooperate with law enforcement as the case proceeds.
