Four soldiers were injured after troops of the Nigerian Army encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) attack followed by an ambush along the Damboa–Kumala–Maiduguri main supply route in Borno State.
Security sources disclosed that the incident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on May 16, 2026, approximately nine kilometres from the Kumala junction in Konduga Local Government Area.
The troops, drawn from the 25 Brigade and conducting a dominance patrol along the strategic highway, reportedly triggered a command-detonated IED planted by suspected terrorists before coming under heavy ambush attack.
Despite the assault, the troops successfully fought through the ambush, although four soldiers sustained varying degrees of injuries during the engagement.
Following the attack, reinforcements from the brigade headquarters, supported by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, were deployed to the area to reinforce security and clear the route.
The EOD team subsequently discovered and safely neutralised another suspected IED planted along the same axis.
Sources further revealed that security operatives safely escorted 89 civilian vehicles through the corridor, while an additional 165 vehicles were turned back to Damboa as a precautionary measure due to ongoing clearance operations.
Military authorities said efforts were ongoing to secure the highway and ensure safe movement along the critical supply route.
