Katsina, Nigeria — A former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), and his wife have reportedly been abducted by suspected kidnappers in Katsina State.
The incident was disclosed on Saturday by former Senator Babafemi Ojudu in a statement shared on Facebook. According to Ojudu, the information was relayed to him by retired Brigadier General Sagir Musa.
Reports indicate that the retired senior military officer and his wife were kidnapped while travelling through Matazu Local Government Area on their way to Katsina town. Their driver reportedly escaped from the attack despite sustaining a gunshot wound.
According to the account, the couple was travelling in a red Peugeot 504 vehicle, which was later recovered and found parked at the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from security agencies in Katsina State or the Defence Headquarters regarding the alleged abduction.
Major General Rabe Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters between 2015 and 2017, overseeing military media and public communications during his tenure.
The reported kidnapping has heightened concerns over the persistent security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, where incidents of banditry and abductions for ransom continue despite ongoing military and security operations aimed at restoring peace and stability.
Authorities are yet to provide further details on efforts to secure the release of the retired general and his wife.
