The Delta State Government has issued a strong warning against assaults on law enforcement officers following rising tensions in parts of the state over the death of Mr. Oghenemine Ogidi in Effurun.
In a public notice signed by the Director General, Security Matters and Coordinator of Operation Delta Sweep, Hon. David Tonwe, the government acknowledged public concerns surrounding the incident and assured residents that investigations were ongoing to ensure justice is served.
According to the statement, authorities became concerned after a recent encounter involving officers of Operation Delta Sweep during a routine patrol. The government said an individual who was stopped by security operatives allegedly became unruly, questioned the lawful stop, and physically assaulted an officer by grabbing and dragging the officer’s uniform.
The statement clarified that the officer involved was a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps carrying out official duties, and not a police officer as widely circulated on social media.
The state government and security agencies condemned the attack, stressing that public anger over the Ogidi incident does not justify violence or obstruction against security personnel.
Tonwe warned residents against assaulting, obstructing, or disrespecting law enforcement officers, describing such actions as criminal offences that would attract legal consequences.
He also cautioned against self-help and mob action, noting that grievances relating to misconduct or brutality by security agents should be reported through official channels, including the Police Complaints Response Unit or the Office of the Director General, Security Matters.
The government appealed for calm and urged citizens to allow the law to take its course, emphasizing that attacks on security operatives undermine public safety and make policing more difficult.
“The State Government remains committed to justice, accountability, and the protection of all residents,” the statement added.
