COAS Says Nigerian Army Aviation Key to Operational Successes

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, says the Nigerian Army Aviation has become a critical force multiplier in ongoing military operations across the country, significantly enhancing operational effectiveness against terrorists and other criminal elements.

Shaibu stated this during the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 held on Monday at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, Abuja.

The COAS said the establishment and expansion of Army Aviation capabilities had improved intelligence gathering, rapid troop deployment, aerial surveillance and close air support for ground troops in various theatres of operation.

According to him, the evolving security environment requires modern operational capabilities and technological support to effectively counter emerging threats.

He noted that Army Aviation had continued to support troops engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, anti-banditry operations in the North-West and other security operations across the country.

“The integration of Army Aviation into our operational framework has greatly enhanced operational flexibility, mobility and rapid response capability.

“It has also improved intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, thereby increasing the effectiveness of our troops on the ground,” he said.

Shaibu explained that the Nigerian Army had continued to invest in training and capacity building for aviation personnel to ensure professionalism and operational efficiency.

He added that the Army Headquarters remained committed to providing the necessary logistics and technical support required to sustain aviation operations.

The COAS stressed that modern military operations required synergy between land and air components to effectively confront contemporary security threats.

He noted that Army Aviation had continued to complement the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies in joint operations across the country.

Shaibu further disclosed that the Nigerian Army was intensifying efforts to improve operational readiness through realistic training exercises and acquisition of modern equipment.

He commended officers and soldiers involved in aviation operations for their dedication, professionalism and sacrifices in support of national security.

The COAS reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to building a professional, combat-ready and technology-driven force capable of effectively responding to security challenges.

He urged personnel to remain disciplined and committed to the Army’s core values while sustaining operational momentum in all theatres.
