NIS Suspends Senior Officers Over Alleged Extortion Along Lagos–Seme Border Corridor

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated disciplinary measures against senior officers supervising operations along the Lagos–Seme border corridor following allegations of extortion.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 10, and signed by the Service’s spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, the action was prompted by viral reports on social media accusing some immigration personnel of exploiting travellers.

The statement disclosed that the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has temporarily relieved the comptrollers in charge of the affected commands of their duties pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

Nandap was quoted as strongly condemning the alleged misconduct, describing it as unacceptable and a clear violation of the Service’s professional standards, ethics, and operational guidelines.

“The actions portrayed in the reports are in direct violation of the core values of the Service,” the statement read.

The NIS assured that the investigation would be comprehensive and far-reaching, with a focus on identifying all personnel involved. It added that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken promptly against any officer found culpable.

The move comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the conduct of immigration personnel at Nigeria’s border posts.
