Troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two personnel who were killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State, in a development that has reignited national attention and emotion.
Security sources confirmed that the victims, Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were abducted and killed by suspected IPOB/ESN elements along the Ubaha–Orsu axis of Imo State.
In April 2022, the couple had embarked on a journey to Gloria’s hometown for their traditional wedding ceremony—an occasion meant to unite their families and celebrate their relationship. Audu, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, had completed years of dedicated service, while Mathew remained in active service, known among colleagues for her discipline and commitment.
Their relationship, according to associates, was defined by mutual respect and sacrifice, having endured distance due to postings in Sokoto and Makurdi. However, their journey was cut short when they were abducted along the Ubaha–Orsu route, an incident that drew widespread condemnation.
Following their disappearance and subsequent killing, the Nigerian Army sustained efforts to locate their remains.
After nearly four years, troops of the 82 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted a targeted clearance and search operation on April 24, 2026, in the area linked to the incident.
Sources said the operation, driven by fresh intelligence, encountered resistance as suspected armed elements launched coordinated attacks, including an ambush and follow-up assault. The troops, however, repelled the attackers and secured the area.
During the operation, shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the deceased personnel were discovered. The graves were carefully excavated, and the remains recovered for forensic examination.
Military authorities disclosed that steps are underway to contact the families for DNA verification to ensure proper identification ahead of burial.
The Nigerian Army has affirmed its commitment to accord the fallen personnel full military honours, in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of the South East, where attacks by armed groups have impacted both civilians and security forces. Authorities say sustained operations, supported by intelligence-led strategies, are being intensified to restore stability in the region.
